Jan Donaldson
Fiber Artist ~ Clothing Designer
Yikes! It's been 2 years since I updated my page. Busy time in that I moved twice and any one who knows me knows how much stuff I have. Scary.! First I moved to a beach house in Cobble Hill and my wretched landlord sold it out from under me so now I'm in a wonderful house in Duncan with all the space I could want for creativity , workspace , showroom and gallery. I love it. Already the creativity is flowing, with my new music line, logo line and quite a few hand stitched hangings started. My real passion right now is stagewear and very large hangings. I have one started that is about 15'wide all handstitched of sunset, mountains ,water and trees..It is a WOW piece.
This is one of my favourites. It draws your eyes into the depth of the scene and fabrics. A photo just doesn't show the magic of this piece. Sigh!.. .I'm wearing "DUET' with a mermaid on the front and a merman and castle on the back playing mystical horns over the shoulder. See more details in the Quilted Wallhanging Gallery here
In 2003, I celebrated my 25th anniversary of "Living the Life of a Professional Craftsperson". Yikes! I celebrated it with a One Woman Show I called "Threads of Passion". I guess that makes it 28 years now.
My other passion is clothing for kids and adults, and quilted wall pieces, I first started as a quilter, and then changing into clothing designer which incorporates my love of applique with whimsical desings for kids and adults.
Throughout the years, I have done almost every major show across Canada, including the "Salon des Metiers d'Art" in Montreal (my first show), "One of a Kind" in Toronto, "Circle Craft" in Vancouver, and Filberg Festival" in Comox, BC.
I have taught all over, including hosting my own television series for three years, "Jan Donaldson's Quilted World" in Montreal, and received an "Excellence in Programming" Award for it. I also taught in the Provincial Museum in Edmonton and Adult Education.
For my first six years in business, I was home based on a farm in Quebec. Next, I had my studio storefront on Queen Street in Toronto for six years, then for 14 years with same studio and store front idea in Chemainus, BC.
In 2004 I moved from Chemainus to Cobble Hill on the ocean. I called it Paradise...I only got a short year there and now I'm in Duncan .in a wonderful place.
I'm so lucky to have found early on in my life where my passions lay and here it is, 28 years later and it's still a passion for me.
The hand applique work reflects my whimsical look and love of life, gardens and the world around me. Colour, rich textures, and glitz draw you into the life of each piece. Stage wear and wall pieces perk my interest the most this year.
I spent a couple of months just creating whatever I wanted in appliques to see if it still flowed as easily as it used to and it did. Fairies, wanderers, my trees, sunsets, musicians and even a golf course were all part of my stitching. It felt so good. And then came "Duet". My mermaid and merman on a bolero jacket playing mystical horns together.
A whole new specturm of ideas have emerged from creating that one.
